Reading Lesson 3
Next

The reading exercises progress rather quickly. If you find them getting difficult please remember each exercise is ment to be played daily for one week. If you play these 2 exercises below 2 or 3 times a day and review the last reading lesson 2 or 3 times a day by the end of the week I promise they won't seem nearly so difficult.

Rhythm

The eighth note is worth half of a beat. Looks like a quarter note with a tail. Beside the eighth note is an eighth rest also worth half of a beat.

Two eighth notes beside each other may be beamed like in the exercises below.

E, F & G

The first line uses our open E and open B strings. The second line uses E, F and new note G. Now you must watch for the notes to move by step or skip. Notice the eighth notes beamed.

Ex. 1

How do we know G is a whole step higher than F? Where are the half steps?

Hint: Bert & Ernie

B, C & D

Eighth notes cannot be beamed together across a bar line nor should they beam from the '&' of beat 2 to beat 3. It is important to see the half way point in the measure.
