Sweet Home Alabama Guitar Lesson

Learn how to play Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd

This lesson is a small sample from the Classic Rock Course and Series and a new class is about to start.  More information below.   For now watch the video have fun learning this great classic rock riff!

If we are following the alternate pick rules then we should down pick the 3rd note (down beat of 2) but I wrote it with an up because this seems to be a way a lot of students seem to prefer to play it.

Half Speed (49 bpm)

Example below repeats 4 times

Full Speed (98 bpm)

Example below repeats 4 times

In the example below we add the open D on the 'a' of beat 2.

Half Speed (49 bpm)

Example below repeats 4 times

Full Speed (98 bpm)

Example below repeats 4 times

Please note that on the record this part is picked and not slurred (pull offs and hammer ons).

From years of teaching this riff, I have found most students find it easier to pull off and hammer on.  Try it both ways and see what works better for you.

We start with C on the 3rd fret of our 5th string (A string) then play the A and back to the C.
